I currently do not have any expansions for WoW but I was wondering what would happen to my current characters if I were to install "Wrath of the Lich King"? Would they be deleted or just still be there?

I have fallen into the molten span on my way back to my body and now can't get out. What can I do?
I'm level 23 rogue dwarf and have no means of resurecting myself.
Any help at all would be really appreciated as I haven't moved for 2 days now.
